1.20.2010Cinema Epoch acquires "SKIRT DAY"
Cinema Epoch has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Isabelle Adjani-starrer SKIRT DAY (La Journee De La Jupe). The film is Adjani's return to the screen after a five year hiatus and premiered at the Berlin Film Festival.
The deal was negotiated between Cinema Epoch president Gregory Hatanaka and Rezo Films head of international sales Sebastien Chesneau. It is a Mascaret Films/Arte France/RTBF/Fontana Belgium Production and is directed by Jean-Paul Lilienfeld.
Screen veteran Isabelle Adjani stars as Sonia Bergerac, an instructor at a school for "difficult" children. As if that role were not demanding enough, Sonia's husband suddenly and inexplicably leaves her, and she encounters considerable problems adjusting to her work environment. She thus finds herself careening toward a nervous breakdown, with seemingly no way to stop.
Compounding matters is Sonia's decision to buck the principal's rule of no skirts for female teachers, a policy she resents. Sonia's world explodes into chaos one afternoon when she discovers a gun in one of her students' bags. Acting spontaneously and indignantly, she seizes it and fires an accidental shot, wounding one pupil's leg. The incident gets misread and draws untoward attention, and before long parents, politicians, law officers and the media surround the school and turn an unfortunate incident into a full-blown hostage crisis that may well push Sonia over the edge of sanity.
Cinema Epoch will release the film theatrically in early Spring.
The acquisition is one of the first of Cinema Epoch's theatrical acquisitions as it branches into the arthouse/foreign language market.

1.20.2010Cinema Epoch acquires "HIDDEN LOVE"
Cinema Epoch has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the Italian production L'AMOUR CACHE (Hidden Love) directed by Alessandro Capone. The film stars Isabelle Huppert, Greta Scacchi and Melanie Laurent (Inglourious Basterds). It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and is a Cristaldi Pictures Production.
The deal was negotiated between Cinema Epoch president Gregory Hatanaka and Parkland Pictures CEO John Cairns and International Sales head Ivo Fiorenza.
Isabelle Huppert plays Danielle, a middle-aged woman rebounding from the trauma of an unsuccessful suicide attempt, and wrestling resolutely with the inner demons that propelled her into that tragic emotional state. Greta Scacchi (White Mischief) co-stars as Dr. Nielsen, the psychiatrist assigned to guide Danielle through therapy and recovery.
Though the patient initially presents herself as unwilling to vocalize, in time she picks up a pen and attempts to write, letting the words flow out of her, cathartically, onto paper. It becomes apparent to both doctor and subject that the source of Danielle's trauma lies in her dysfunctional, estranged relationship with her daughter, Sophie (Mélanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds) - now a contented, healthy wife and mother with a husband and a small child of her own - and that Danielle herself caused the schism by allowing irrational feelings of jealousy and inadequacy to separate her from Sophie.
Danielle soon realizes that if she is to make any progress on emotional and psychological levels, she and Sophie must work through the immense obstacle of anger that divides them.
The acquisition is one of the first of Cinema Epoch's theatrical acquisitions as it branches into the arthouse/foreign language market. Cinema Epoch president Gregory Hatanaka says "We are delighted to be bringing this intense drama, featuring a terrific performance by Isabelle Huppert, to the American audience. It is a compelling account of the conflictions of motherhood."

A Film by Ryan Harper
Ana is a middle aged Mexican woman who works at her family's restaurant. On her way to visit her new boyfriend at a beach side hotel, her jealous ex-husband attempts a vicious kidnapping resulting in a car accident that kills them both. Ana crawls out of the wreckage and in the sweltering heat walks down the highway towards the nearest town.
Finally, a vehicle stops. Gene is an older American tourist vacationing in Baja. He's retired and has rough way about him. He waves Ana into his RV, but they immediately encounter a communication barrier. Ana doesn't speak English and Gene doesn't speak Spanish. Ana soon finds that her world is not the same. The hotel where she was supposed to meet her boyfriend is in ruins and the people that inhabit it seem more animal like than human. She demands that Gene takes her back home, but when she gets there her dead brother rejects her and she is forced to continue with Gene.
Later that night she has a disturbing nightmare that introduces her to her animal self. She dreams of moths and caterpillars intertwined with human limbs and body parts. She wakes up more confused and shaken, but her journey continues until she learns to embrace her animal self. |
